Swakopmund

Swakopmund is a popular seaside resort with a slightly nostalgic atmosphere, many tourist attractions and a pleasant climate in summer.

The appearance of the town is characterized by numerous colonial buildings with the Woermann House from 1905 as its landmark.

For those interested in adventure activities Swakopmund offers sand boarding, quad biking, parachuting, hot air ballooning, deep sea fishing and beach angling.

Walvis Bay is Namibia’s major port and the town is dominated by its fishing industry.

The special attraction of Walvis Bay is the huge natural lagoon with its overwhelming abundance of seabirds like flamingos and rare white pelicans.

A unique experience is the adventurous 48 km drive to Sandwich Harbour, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by dunes, and a favourite amongst anglers and ornithologists.

The Damara name is derived from the Nama word "Dama", meaning "who walked here". The Damara people were known to the Nama people by the footprints they left around waterhole's.

The total population of Damara people, one of the oldest cultural groups in the country, is approximately 90 000.
