Did you know?

Although hippo's feed on plants, they are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal in Africa, this is because they are very territorial and will come into conflict with anyone who enters their space. Hippo's once flourished in the waters of the Nile River, but are now extinct in this region.

Africa Adventure Travel News Map

The N7 travel route takes you from Cape Town in the South to the Namibian border in the North. This route offers you spectacular contrasts in scenery from the lush coastal lagoon at Langebaan to the unique rock formation of the Cederberg, to the desert mountains of the Richtersveld National Park.
Bushmen were once prominent in this area and the whole region is speckled with ancient bushmen rock art dated up to 6000 years old. The West Coast National Park near Langebaan was declared in 1985, to protect the coastal environment, it now incorporates a large part of the Langebaan Lagoon and protects about 30 000 hectares of coastal vegetation. Further north Vanrhynsdorp takes you through the fynbos studded mountains of Matsikamma and into Namaqualand, famous for the kaleidoscopic displays of wild flowers that blossom here between July and September. In the north of the Namaquland lies the barren moonscapes of the Richtersveld National Park.

Langebaan, with its lagoon, sheltered from the harsh break & cold waters of the Atlantic ocean, has become a holiday makers haven. Not only famous for the many watersports on offer, Langebaan is home to the West Coast National Park. The Cederberg Wilderness area is famous for its spectacular rock formations, and numerous san rock art paintings, some of which are up to 6000 years old. This is a popular area for hiking, mountain biking and rock climbing. Rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes sweep inland to reveal the Richtersveld National Park. Jointly managed by the Nama people and SANparks, this park is famous for rich desert flora and flower displays.

Hamerkop
One of South Africa’s favorites, hippo’s bodies are too dense for them to swim or float so they move around by pushing off the riverbed or plodding along the bottom. The Kokerboom can be found in desert areas. It’s branches are situated high on its trunk and reach upwards, becoming the highest point in the desert.

Endemic to Sub Saharan Africa, the Hamerkop, is the sole member of its family. It is revered by many tribes as magical because of its large impenetrable nest.

Nama People
Rooibos tea, a South African favourite for years, contains no caffeine and less tannin than other teas. It possesses healing qualities for numerous allergies and ailments. Traditionally South African, Melktert, is a sweet pastry crust dessert, with a lightly textured custard filling and strong milk taste, topped off with cinnamon.

In the Richtersveld you can still find the Nama people living traditional lives. They are known for crafts which range from leatherwork to clay pots.
