The Elephant Sanctuary, South Africa

The Elephant Sanctuary program runs three very successful sanctuaries for rescued African elephants:

  • One on the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains on the Garden Route, 16 kilometres east of Plettenberg Bay.
  • Another one at the Hartbeespoort Dam, an hour's drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
  • One 5 kilometres from Hazyview, only 10 minutes from Kruger National Park's Phabeni Gate.

We offer guest and elephant driven programs where the most important part of our operation is happy elephants and satisfied guests.

Our focus is on education through interaction, so you will not only learn a lot about elephants, but also get to touch, feed and groom these magnificent animals.

A trunk-in-hand-walk and elephant rides

Imagine walking trunk-in-hand with these extraordinary giants while they dutifully follow you. Do not worry though, interaction with an elephant always happens under the watchful eyes of that specific elephant's guide.

With this in mind, you can relax and enjoy the swaying rhythm of elephant-back rides, a privilege historically reserved only for royalty! It is a truly amazing experience to ride these magnificent animals.

Besides taking part in the morning grooming of the elephants, visitors can also join the training- and stimulation program the handlers do with the elephants every day.

These exercises will show that elephants are highly intelligent and you will discover a different character, personality and temperament within each one.

Please also enquire about our packages at the different sanctuaries that can either include lunch, sundowners or dinner.
